DEAR FRIEND AND SUPPORTER,
I am proud of the history of our office and what we have accomplished during my time as your Assessor/County Clerk/Recorder. During the pasr 4 years Riverside County has gone from one of the fastest growing counties in the country to among the leaders nationwide in foreclosures, REO’s (bank owned sales) and distressed sales. New construction, both residential and commercial which has been the mainstay of our county for most of the last decade has almost come to a standstill.
We understand property owners have concerns regarding the current real estate crisis and the impact it may have on their property taxes. Property tax law provides certain protections for taxpayers when property values decline. Under Proposition 8, qualifying properties will be given a temporary reduction in their taxable value which translates into a lower property tax.
Beginning in 2007 we took an independent and proactive approach to temporary declines under Proposition 8. Through the hard work of our dedicated staff, in 2009 we reviewed over 370,000 single family residences, condominiums, and manufactured homes that sold after January 1, 2001. We reduced over 300,000 properties, resulting in an average tax savings of about $1,600 for single-family residences and $1,300 for condominiums, from their peak two years ago. For 2010 we will again continue to aggressively review property values increasing our target properties to any residential properties sold after January 1, 1999. Making proper reductions under Proposition 8 is the law, but it’s also the right thing to do.
I am proud of our accomplishments, but know there is much more to do. I have the experience, integrity and determination to do the job you expect and demand.
It is an honor to serve as your Assessor/County Clerk/Recorder and with your help I look forward to serving you for the next four years.
Please vote June 8th.
